Short Takes

Don’t you love it when you fly coach and the person in the seat in front of you reclines to the maximum degree for the entire flight? It’s just one of those little irritating things about travel, and it’s not just flying where fellow travelers can give you a case of heartburn. There’s the driver who stays in the passing lane unnecessarily when others want to pass him. The train passenger who sprawls over two seats in order to block you from sitting down. Or the annoying cruise ship passenger who’s decided you’re his new best friend and won’t leave you alone. . . .

Do you know the difference between a “nonstop” flight and a “direct” flight? Most passengers don’t. A nonstop flight means your plane doesn’t stop until it reaches your destination. A direct flight may make an intermediate stop to load and unload passengers. Some direct flights may even require a change of planes though the flight number may remain the same. . . .

Kudos to Avis and Budget who promise to ban smoking in all rental vehicles beginning October 1. . . .

The premium frozen yogurt chain, Pinkberry, in California, New York and Texas, opens its first airport facility in Terminal 1 at Los Angeles’ international airport. . . .

Gap opens its first store in Tel Aviv with another in Jerusalem to follow. Watch out, Benetton. . . .

Check your passport. If it’s within six months of expiring, get a new one. Some countries, such as Mexico, won’t admit you if you’re passport is set to expire in less than six months. . . .

A California travel agency called the Singles Travel Company just announced the World’s First International Cougar Cruise. No, this isn’t a safari at sea. It’s a cruise meant to bring together young men who have a thing for older women, or cougars, as women between the ages of 35 and 50 are sometimes called. This is a three-day cruise departing San Diego on December 4th, and the newly crowned 42-year-old Miss Cougar USA, Gloria Navarro, will be aboard. The guys will have 36 hours to find the Mrs. Robinson of their dreams. Is America a great country or what?

RE: Reclining to the max for an entire flight. Last week I was on an Air France ( Delta Code Share) and I was thankful that the announcement( which I have suggested MANY times) to please raise your seatbacks during meal service. Common sense you would think n'est-ce pas?
