Big Shoulder Bravura!

Monday, December 14, 2009 by Jason Oliver Nixon.

When I am feeling a special case of the mean reds, there’s only one solution: I zip out of town (aka New York City) and lap up a long weekend in my other most favorite city in America.

Drumroll, please.

The Maine Event

Wednesday, December 09, 2009 by Jason Oliver Nixon.

I am simply mad about the state of Maine. Crazy. Cuckoo. Over the moon. If you read my blog religiously—and those of you who do are saints—you know that I practically live my life in a Maine-made L.L. Bean Boat and Tote bag, the one must-have accessory that no one can be without. In fact, I have 47 Boat and Totes, but that’s an issue for a therapist and not for public discussion.

Bookish Charms

Friday, December 04, 2009 by Jason Oliver Nixon.

I am preparing my holiday gifting list and checking it twice and thrice. Champagne is a favorite (it’s Veuve or bust, baby) as are citrus-scented candles from London’s Fortnum & Mason. CDs, too. Think everything from the Blow Monkeys to Bryan Ferry and maybe a dash of The Cult and Lady Gaga for good measure. But what else? Frankly, I love nothing more than bestowing delicious coffee table books upon my friends and talented co-workers, so here are a few far-flung favorites that channel a global go-to sensibility.

Ciao-Ciao, Mr. Chow

Monday, November 30, 2009 by Jason Oliver Nixon.

Just before Thanksgiving—and en route to Antigua, Guatemala, where the Nixon clan celebrates the holiday—I spent a few nights in Miami to catch up on what’s doing in this balmy, beachy burg. There have been a slew of new hotels and restaurants open of late in South Beach, so I wanted to check in on the latest and greatest.

Tales of Paper Trails

Monday, November 16, 2009 by Jason Oliver Nixon.

Where would I spend my last dime, you might ask? Travel, certainly. Maybe a trip to Buenos Aires or Marrakech. On a good tailor, no doubt. On a terrific bottle of wine, perhaps a Super Tuscan. And most definitely upon fabulous stationery. I truly believe that handwritten notes are absolutely essential in today’s helter-skelter world of e-mail, Tweets, text messages and other electronic-driven ephemera.

Feasts & Fêtes

Wednesday, November 11, 2009 by Jason Oliver Nixon.

I am especially partial to throwing dinner parties. After all, what’s better than sitting down to a fabulous repas at someone’s home, n’est-ce pas? For a dinner party is so much more personal than a meal at a restaurant and much more intimate and conducive to delicious conversation.

But planning the perfect dinner at home does take work and planning.

So here are a few fun and frisky tips:

My Life Aquatic

Thursday, October 29, 2009 by Jason Oliver Nixon.

I live in New York City and have out-of-town friends, acquaintances and my mother who seem to think that I am a walking-talking version of the Zagat Survey when it comes to dining in the Big Apple.

EXAMPLE A:

“We are in the city next month and want something ‘of-the-moment and downtown but not too pricey.’”—the friend

[My response: If it’s “of-the-moment,” it’s probably not cheap. And can you give me a parameter or two in terms of cuisine? Chinese? French? And what do you mean by “downtown?” In its vibe? Or does it have to be south of 14th Street?]

Windy City Sublime

Thursday, October 22, 2009 by Jason Oliver Nixon.

Dear Readers:

It has been an absolute zip-zip-zip of late—as those of you reading my Tweets can attest. First it was Bologna, Italy, for Cersaie, the international exhibition of ceramic tiles and bathroom furnishings, where I scoped the latest and greatest in Italian flooring and fittings. And from there it was on to Venice to write my feature on La Serenissima for the December issue of the magazine. And then it was on to London and now, finally, back to New York.

Scents and Sensibility

Tuesday, October 13, 2009 by Jason Oliver Nixon.

Dear Readers:

As many of you know, I love nothing more than reading the missives that you send to me by way of my jetset.delta@gmail.com e-mail address and then responding with what I hope is useful information.

Best of the West

Tuesday, October 06, 2009 by Jason Oliver Nixon.

If camping with Team Subaru was the ice cream on the cake of my Wyoming adventure, then the last night of our Subaru Responsible Recreation Excursion sojourn was the chocolate sauce, sprinkles and cherry on top. For after four nights of roughing it, we packed up tent—following the guidance of our Leave No Trace comrades, natch—and zipped off in our groovy Outbacks and Foresters for a night at the nearby super-luxe Amangani resort in Jackson Hole.
