Last Night, I Dreamed of Africa

Dear readers: I am back from my scintillating sojourn through the Middle East and Africa, but that doesn’t mean that the vacation can’t be savored again and again.

Yes, dear readers, I am taking a stand: Athens is my most favorite city of the moment, and you must plan to visit there in the near future. Now, I have visited the Greek capital a few times in the past—most recently two years ago—and, frankly, I was somewhat underwhelmed. Even post-Olympics, the city was a bit of a dust bowl. But, wow!, Athens has cleaned itself up and is definitely ready for its close-up.

I have just spent two glorious days in the Nile-hugging town of Luxor in Egypt. Readers: I am simply smitten with this chic city. (And you know what a tough customer I am, right?) The raison d’etre for this town, of course, are its two amazing temple complexes: Luxor and Karnak. Frankly, I have never been so blown away in my life: the majesty, the scale, the history.

This past weekend, I savored the myriad pleasures of Oman’s capital, Muscat, situated at the southern edge of the Arabian Peninsula. Oman in nothing like the Emirates: There’s no flash, no glitz, no skyscrapers, and far less of a Western influence. Women dress conservatively in abeyyas and Omani men don dishdashas (white shirtdresses) and embroidered hats.

A few days in Emirati state of Dubai and wow, what a place. Imagine lots of Las Vegas and a bit of Miami rolled into one, and you sort of get the idea. There are lots of gee whiz factors, including the biggest, first of its kind and “how the heck did they build something like that?” sky scraper. The world’s tallest building looms on the horizon and opens in September. There are sprawling shopping malls filled with outposts of every designer under the sun. Then there’s the man-made Palm Jumeirah islands with the mirage-like Atlantis The Palm resort; the Burj Al Arab, the famous sail-shaped hotel situated on a miniature island in the Arabian Sea; six-lane super highways; and a flashy royal palace where peacocks honk and holler in the front yard. It’s all a bit surreal and brand new.

As my faithful blog readers know, I have jaunted off to the Middle East
for a grand tour that will carry me from Egypt to Dubai and then onward
through Oman and Jordan before returning to Egypt and then on to Athens
via the Suez Canal.
Yesterday I flew into Cairo from New York, and I wanted to share some moments from today’s adventures.

This jet-set lad’s friends all seem to be alpha-influencer types, the ones who visit a country long before it hits the mainstream and who dine at restaurants that lack signage and telephone numbers. Take my great pal Leslie, for instance, who traveled to the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan a few years back when the county had barely opened its doors to foreigners. She has also visited Mongolia twice and dined innumerable times at Monkey Bar, the hottest restaurant right now in Manhattan.
Global Lifestyle Editor Jason Oliver Nixon is always on the prowl for the latest and greatest finds, whether it’s ferreting out the grooviest new restaurant in Paris or unearthing a home design store in Dubai. "I am attracted by color and energy, passion and verve," says Nixon. "Who wants to be beige and boring?" The former Editor in Chief of Gotham, Hamptons, and Los Angeles Confidential magazines, Nixon makes frequent appearances on television as a style authority. A resident of Brooklyn, New York, Nixon escapes to London whenever possible, where he can be found happily ensconced at Fortnum & Mason perusing new-fangled jams.
