I am preparing my holiday gifting list and checking it twice and thrice. Champagne is a favorite (it’s Veuve or bust, baby) as are citrus-scented candles from London’s Fortnum & Mason. CDs, too. Think everything from the Blow Monkeys to Bryan Ferry and maybe a dash of The Cult and Lady Gaga for good measure. But what else? Frankly, I love nothing more than bestowing delicious coffee table books upon my friends and talented co-workers, so here are a few far-flung favorites that channel a global go-to sensibility.

Where would I spend my last dime, you might ask? Travel, certainly. Maybe a trip to Buenos Aires or Marrakech. On a good tailor, no doubt. On a terrific bottle of wine, perhaps a Super Tuscan. And most definitely upon fabulous stationery. I truly believe that handwritten notes are absolutely essential in today’s helter-skelter world of e-mail, Tweets, text messages and other electronic-driven ephemera.

Time to Take Stock

Since I live to eat instead of eating to live, I have moments when I am tempted to rush to the diet aisle at my local pharmacy and stock up on powders, pills and potions that promise instant weight loss. But would I really look like the Adonis featured on the packaging after only two days? And what are the side effects since I can surely give up food, but doffing the wine isn’t likely to happen? I have no interest in having three-headed children down the road nor ending up in the ER for popping protein powder chased with Popov.
