Puttin' on the Ritz

Owning a vacation home, for most people, is a dream that doesn’t often turn into a reality. There are those pesky little details—maintenance, affordability, location—that hold us back. Instead, we often venture to hotels or rental property for a quick trip to our destination of choice. There is, however, a new kid on the block, so to speak—a new way to get your dream and vacation there, too.
This past weekend I had the opportunity to venture down to the Caymans to check out what Mike Ryan, owner and developer of The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman, and his team are creating. Their new concept—SecretHarbour—allows people to easily (read: turn-key living, all amenities of Ritz-Carlton included, affordable) own property in the Caribbean.
Mike took us around the property and explained that the inspiration for the design came from a sailing trip he took with his children around the world. Though you are in the Caymans, you’ll see signs of the Mediterranean and even the Far East—white stone, archways, a surprise at every turn.
I think the things that struck me the most—and I am a critic, or so says my father—are: it is easy to get there (there are direct flights from Atlanta, New York and Charlston); you have all of the benefits of staying at the Ritz-Carlton (Eric Ripert restaurant, Greg Norman-designed golf course, Nick Bolleteri tennis school, Jean-Michel Cousteu eco-adventure family program, spa, etc.), but you own your home; and the service is second to none.
Insider Tip: One of the best culinary experiences on the island is right in your back yard. Try Eric Ripert's Classic Tasting Menu at Blue for an exquisite seafood experience (Even those adverse to seafood will love it. We turned a seafood hater into a shrimp- and dorade-lover.).
